Charlotte Stordahl (secretary) will be collecting fat-quarters—of BATIKS—from our guild members to give to Kim as a thank you gift. Kim will be presented the fat-quarters in a nice gift basket at the September guild meeting. Please bring them to the August meeting and give them to Charlotte. THANKS!
There's lots going on this week with the quilt show! Here are a few reminders.
Location, location, location —for those of you that have not been to Faith Baptist Bible College, it is located at 1900 NW 4th Street, Ankeny, Iowa. To get there: go West on W. 1st Street, turn Right (North) onto NW Abilene Road.
Our special guest speaker is Karen McTavish. She will present four 1-hour lectures that promise to be entertaining, humorous, informal and fun-filled. Same lecture at 10 AM and 1 PM on both Friday and Saturday.
Presentations will include a history of wholecloth, trapunto, helpful techniques, discussion of useful products, machine quilting, many questions and answer opportunities, as well as a special trunk show of Karen's award winning quilts. You can read more about Karen in the newsletter.
Quilts can be dropped off at Quilter's Cupboard, 131 N. Ankeny Blvd. in Ankeny, IA — during store hours beginning July 5 and ending July 12 until NOON only or your may bring them to Faith Baptist Bible College on Thursday, July 12 between 10 AM and NOON.
Quilts must be picked up between 4:15 PM and 5:15 PM on Saturday, July 14. Entries may not be picked up before 4:15 PM on Saturday.
Our annual Quilt Show is upon us and it's going to be bigger and better than ever! Don't forget to put some of your address labels in your purse for a fast way of entering for the door prize, raffle quilt, country store. Denette has done a wonderful job of coordinating the show this year.
I was just surfing the web and came across another website I'd like to share with you. It's www.auctionfabric.com. I happened upon it by accident and thought it was really cool. It looks like different quilt shops all over the country take turns hosting the auction. Check it out when you have the time.
Also, I just wanted to remind you that we do have some workshops coming up soon. Please consider coming to one or all of them. There is a lot of work that goes into getting these set up, not to mention expense, and it would be nice to see that our members are interested in having these workshops in addition to the lectures. Let's try to fill these up, OK? The sign up sheets will be available again at our August meeting or you can call Jenna Ingle or Marlene DaRos anytime to find out more information. Board Meeting, 6/5/07 and AAQG Meeting 6/19/07
This will be a combination of the minutes from the Board Meeting on 6/5/07 and the AAQG Meeting on 6/19/07. The Board meeting was attended by Susan, Denette, Marlene, Diana, Kay, Kim ,Celeste, Sharon, Sammy, Charlotte and Jenna. The board is asking that those members who have email PLEASE consider getting your newsletter through your email. With postage going up and the printing cost per newsletter it roughly cost $10.00 per year per member to have the newsletter printed and sent U.S.P.S. Some guilds charge those members more to cover this cost. Please think about it! There will be no July meeting for members but the board will meet on July 17 at 6:30. July 3rd was too close to the holiday and many board members will be gone. Positions open for 2007-2008 year are V.P, Treasure, Quilt Show Chair and Elect, and Program Chair Elect. Please consider helping out in any position that sounds good to you. Sign ups for the workshops in Aug. (applique) and Sept. (hand dyeing fabric) are available now. The Quilting Treasures brought in $580.00. Thanks to all who donated and shopped. It's not too late to sign up to volunteer at the quilt show. Schedules will be at the meeting or call Denette. Raffle tickets are still available. Please turn in all tickets by Sat. at 3:00 if not before. The sooner the better. Call Joyce if you have questions.
The program for June's meeting was presented my Nolting Quilting, from Hiawatha ,Iowa. Dan Terrill showed us "Everything we ever wanted to know about quilting but were afraid to ask". Tim made it look so easy and fun we were all inspired. See you at the show!

We are so lucky to have Karen McTavish at our quilt show this year! Since some people may not know much about her, we thought we'd do a little article on her. Anyone who goes to her lectures—trunk show will be so glad they did! Here's the bio that's on her website. www.designerquilts.com
Longarm machine quilting allows me to combine my two passions: Wholecloth and Trapunto. I specialize in crafting award-winning heirloom quilts using techniques which allow machine quilters to replicate traditional hand-quilted effects. I have been featured on PBS's Quilt Central, and HGTV's Simply Quilts. My work has appeared in Joanne Line's books, Quilts from the Quilt Makers Gift #1 and #2, Helen Squire's Mix and Match Patterns and numerous national magazines and journals. I have authored four books in the last 4 years. My first book, Quilting for Show, which was self-published, will be re-released in the spring of 2007 with On-Word Bound Books. I work and teach from my studio and travel all over the country teaching McTavishing, Trapunto, Wholecloth Design and advanced longarm machine quilting workshops. Each year our guild awards a very special honor, the Mary Conkel Award. It is awarded to a member who generously volunteers their time and talent to the guild and shares their knowledge and enthusiasm for quilting. Congratulations to the 2007 winner, Linda Schlenker!
Susan and Celeste sent me some questions to help me write an article about winning the 2007 Mary Conkel and hopefully I will answer them in this article.
Since I have only been a guild member for the past 3 years, I was never so surprised in my whole life as when Kim announced my name as the winner of the 2007 Mary Conkel Award. I hope that I had enough presence of mind to say "Thank you", but in case I didn't "Thank you". I knew Mary Conkel as Sid and Sue's mother. I grew up about 3 miles north of Conkel's farm and rode the same school bus as Sid and Sue, but sadly I don't have any specific memories of Mary herself.
Yes, I am one of those rare people who were actually born and raised on a farm near Ankeny and still live in the country. I graduated from ISU in computer science and have worked for the State of Iowa for the past 35 years. Currently I manage Windows web servers for the Department of Administrative Services. Other than work and quilting, I read and watch too much TV. I have 2 dogs and 7 cats to care for, and lawn mowing is an endless summer task.
Sewing and quilting have always been a part of my life. It is a heritage of my Mother's family that has been passed along from generation to generation along with a strong 4-H tradition. I was not allowed to use the sewing machine until I was ten when I made a purple paisley apron for 4-H. However when it came to quilt making, my Mom and Grandma thought my first quilt should be hand pieced, so I hand pieced 9-patches—enough for a full plus size quilt. It is actually a comforter because it was tied not quilted. It was completed before I finished high school. Neither of the first quilted quilts I made in the late 1970's have survived. The oldest UFO I have dates from the same era. Making quilts has never been a constant passion for me, but life events like weddings tend to trigger my desire to make a quilt.
My passion is more the fabric¯the color, the feel, the design.
Joining the Ankeny Guild came about because the group of women I worked with all retired. My work team is now all men under the age of 40—a great bunch of guys, but I missed socializing with other women. I was going to various quilt shows and had thought about joining a quild, but didn't know anyone. Then I went to the quilt show the year that Cyndee Davis was quilt show chair-elect. I knew Cyndee thru my Aunt Donna's church and StarTrek conventions, but didn't know she quilted. So there was at least one person, I would know. I joined that September and began meeting all of you.
