The next board meeting will be Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
Members of the 2006-2007 board and the new officers elected at the August guild meeting should come to this meeting.
Karen Spencer, from Pella, will be our speaker. Her lecture and trunk show topic is fabric dyeing and fabric discharge. Karen has been quilting for 25 years, her quilts have been shown in Colorado, Washington, Houston and Barcelona. She also has won ribbons at the Iowa State Fair.
Karen will have a fabric dyeing workshop on Saturday, September 8, 2007. (This is the weekend before our guild meeting.) This is a step by step class on mixing dyes and manipulating fabrics to create colors that are your own. THERE IS STILL SPACE AVAILABLE IN THE CLASS. The class will meet at Jenna Ingle's house and the fee is $25.00. If you are interested please call Jenna, 965-1585, and get the short supply list for the class. It would be great if we could fill the class up—so please think about joining the class—it will be fun!
Thank you to our new board members for providing treats in September.
My name is Cyndee Davis, and I am your new President for the 2007-2008 term. Thank you for your support in electing me to this position. Many of you already know me, but for those who do not, let me tell you a bit about myself. I am married, have a son Adam and a daughter Kelly, 2 natural grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, and 1 great step-grandchild. I have a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and am in private practice at Mental Health & Assessment, where I have been the last 12 years. I am Lay Leader at Marquisville Methodist Church, where I am quite active in their activities. I have been President of Starbase 17 (a Des Moines science fact/fiction club) since 1983. I have a Pug Chopper and 2 cats, Whiner and Kitty Longstockings. I began quilting the day I joined the Guild, which was in September 1999. I was introduced to the Guild by JoAnn Dyar (we attend the same church). At the first meeting, I met Therese Lumley, a friend I hadn't seen in 20+ years. I have served the Guild in many positions, including: Quilt Show Chair, Retreat Chair, and a number of years on different Quilt Show Committee positions.
I have some new ideas for the next year that I hope you will enjoy and some that I think will benefit the Guild. If you have any ideas, questions, comments, feedback, etc., please feel free to speak with me in person, by phone (289-2868) or by email: cyndeetrek@aol.com I am looking forward to our year together.
Thought for the month: Measure twice, cut once.
Happy stitching,
Cyndee

On, Tuesday, July 17, I took 116 donation quilts and fleece blankets divided between two sites. Children and families of Iowa warmly received the quilts and gently used suit cases for the use of their clients. Child Serve of Johnston also received a large donation from the guild. I received the following thank you from their volunteer coordinator who had spoken to our group this year.
Kay Huntimer, Vice President
Thank you for the wonderful donation of 12 bags full of quilts. Your group is so amazing! The whole
building knew that we received quilts that day & everyone had to see them. Some of the quilts have already been given to the
kids in our continuing care unit (the kids that live here), some will be used in our therapy sessions & the rest of
them will be coming into our new transitional care unit (they will be able to take the quilts home with them). Thank you for
all your time you put into these quilts. Thank you for the love you stitched in so many kid's lives through the beautiful quilts.
Kayleen Steele —Child Serve Habilitation Center, Johnston
This may not be the most well kept secret but I know we all want to say THANKS to our out-going President, Kim Manthe! She has done such a GREAT job this past year!!
Charlotte Stordahl (secretary) will be collecting fat-quarters— of BATIKS—from our guild members to give to Kim as a thank you gift. September is your last chance to add to this surprise. Kim will be presented the fat-quarters in a nice gift basket at the September guild meeting.
Congratulations everyone and THANK YOU!
The list of new officers and contact phone numbers are on the address page of the newsletter. We also have a volunteer for the Program Chair elect position. The board will vote on the position at the September meeting.
We really are off to a super new year! We had the first three donation quilts turned in at the August meeting. Thanks to De Tapper, Sandy Plager, and Lois Slaten. Also, Cyndee Davis gave the 1st donation to next years Country Store.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to fellow guild member, Bettie Bennett. Her husband, Bob, passed away in July.
The Eastern Polk Guild has some openings for their fall retreat September 20-23rd. Ankeny guild members are invited to join us! Eastern Polk has national speakers, Mickey Dupre and Sharon Malec giving lectures and classes this fall. Mickey Dupre's workshop, Fantastic Ferns, is Sunday, September 16 and Sharon Malec's workshop, Picture Quilts is Sunday, November 17. If you would like to join either workshop or the retreat or for more information, please give Marlee Jennings a call, 515-965-8094.
Please share your new grandchild with all of us!

Cyndee Davis is holding her new granddaughter, Azrael Zienna Lenhart. Azrael arrived July 29 at 6:54 by emergency C-Section. She weighed 7 lbs. 5 1/2 oz. and was 20" long. She in the first child of Kelly (Cyndee's daughter) and Cody.
Congratulations Cyndee—enjoy your new granddaughter!

8/14/07 Guild meeting—The meeting was called to order by President Kim Manthe. She announced that our member Sharon Hawthorne is recovering from surgery. The slate of officers for the 2007-2008 AAQG board was presented to the members, nominations were opened from the floor. There was a motion made and seconded to accept the ballot as presented. Voted on and passed. See the mailing page of newsletter for list of officers. Kudos to members who won ribbons at the Iowa State Fair and anyone who entered a quilt. Ankeny had quite a number of talented quilters represented. Kim thanked everyone for the wonderful support she has had this past year as president. A special thanks to Denette and the quilt show committee and all the volunteers who made our Quilt Show such a success. Thank you to Marlene DaRos for bringing us Karen McTavish. What an inspiring and awesome quilter she is. Kay Huntimer informed us that 116 Donation Quilt were split between Child Serve and Children and Families of Iowa. The quilts were greatly appreciated by all who received them. Workshop sign-ups will continue tonight for Sept.- Fabric dyeing & Oct.-One of a kind jacket. The final quilt show financial report will be in the Sept. newsletter and Sammy will summarize it at the Sept. meeting. Here is an update on the Iowa State Fair quilting contest commemorating Iowa State University's 150th birthday. (The block contest was announced in our March 2007 newsletter.) Several guild members took part in the fun! Both Linda Schlenker and Ramona Tapper had blocks in the quilt.

Iowa State University Sesquicentennial Quilt
The investigative reporters for the newsletter asked both Linda and Ramona to comment on the contest.
Linda-why did you enter the ISU quilt block design contest? Linda's answer: Well, I could say that I enjoy the challenge of creating a block to fit a theme using only the fabric supplied. Or, I could say that it was an easy way to assist in the support of the Fabric & Threads Department since the finished quilt was raffled to generate more income. But, the real reason I entered the contest was so I could attend the open house on Wednesday night, before the start of the fair for anyone who enters a Fabric & Thread item. Everything has been judged and is on display at the open house. The admission is free, parking on the fairgrounds is easy and free, and while the open house is well attended, it's not so crowded that you can't more freely.
Ramona says: Thanks for noticing my block, there was nothing earth shattering about the block or the process, just wanted to help with a quilt! I have attended ISU years ago and just thought it was neat that the fair was doing a quilt in conjunction with ISU as a challenge. Not only that—red and gold are more stunning than black and gold!
The quilt was auctioned off at the Wood Carver's auction, the last day of the fair. The quilt sold for $4000. The money will go to the Blue Ribbon Foundation which does renovation and preservation of the historic fairgrounds.
This year Ankeny guild members had a huge presence in the Fabric & Thread display at the fair. Congratulations to all who entered—it was so exciting to see your quilts and wearable art! You may visit the state fair website for a list of winning entries. www.iowastatefair.com/competition/results.php
Then select the category Fabric and Threads, then select Quilting.

Amy Leonard's quilt, My Flower Fantasy, won MANY AWARDS! They include:
1st Place in category — small applique, team quilt
Mountain Mist — Best of Show
Iowa State Fair — Best of Show
Des Moines Guild — Best of Show
Quilt Block — Best of Show
Cabin Quilters — Most ribbons for a new exhibitor
There were so many guild members on the list of winning entries. Here are some more guild members who won ribbons! We don't want to leave anyone out—so let us know if your name is not on the list so we can recognize you too. Again, congratulations to all who entered and participated—the Ankeny guild was extremely well represented!
JoAnn Dyar, Linda McGhee, Sherie Johnson, Nancy Herman, Carolyn Magnani, Tamara Watts, Ramona Tapper, Peggy Vespestad, Diane Inman, Linda Northwick, Marilyn Beach, Diana Weirich, Lonnie Parsons, Colette Wortman, Joann Olson.

Joyce Romick won a blue ribbon on her quilt, French Braid.

Fly Away Rose, a wholecloth quilt by Vicki Swensen, won a blue ribbon.
The 2008 Iowa State Fair is scheduled August 7-17th. Entry information is available on the fair website. www.iowastatefair.com/
